ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The bus ride across the state to Eckerd College is no short trip for any Palm Beach Atlantic University athletic team that makes the drive to St. Petersburg to take on the Tritons. That being said, the ride home is much sweeter when a team comes away with a victory which is exactly what the Sailfish women’s soccer team was able to do on Wednesday evening as junior Angie Kuhn registered a goal in the 96th minute to secure a 1-0 overtime victory for the Fish.
Taking part in a makeup contest after being rained out earlier in the season, the Sailfish and Tritons matched up for a late season contest on Wednesday evening that resulted in neither team finding the back of the net through regulation.
Taking on not just the Tritons but a race against the clock, the Sailfish finally found glory when Kuhn broke through the middle of the field and delivered a shot into the upper-left of the goal for a big 1-0 victory. Kuhn’s team-leading sixth goal of the season pushes PBA’s record to 5-8-1 on the season with a few more road contests left to play.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Morrell played the entire contest in goal for the Fish while earning her first and the team’s first shutout of the 2009 season. The victory also broke a six-match losing streak. The loss for Eckerd drops their season record to 2-12 with tonight’s match being their final contest of 2009.
PBA will return home to West Palm Beach and begin to prepare for a trip to Georgia this weekend as they will take on Truett McConnell College on Friday, November 6th and then square off against North Greenville University on Saturday, November 7th. Both matches will be played in Cleveland, Georgia.
