DAYTONA, Fla.- Hitting the road for the first of four road contests to close out the regular season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team traveled up Interstate-95 on Friday afternoon to take on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After tying 1-1 in the first-half, ERAU tallied two goals to the one of the Fish for a 3-2 victory.
Cecilie Henriksen found teammate Elina Johansson for the game’s first goal in the 16th minute as Johansson found the back of the net for the 20th time on the season.
PBA would tie things up not long before halftime as Courtney Calhoun collected the game tying goal just shy of the 39th minute.
The two teams each battle hard in the first-half with the defenses doing a solid job of keeping their opposition from getting good looks at the goal as ERAU managed just six shots while PBA connected for only four.
The second-half of the match once again featured more back-and-forth scoring as ERAU’s Kristen Phelps tallied the team’s second goal of the afternoon on an assist from Johansson in the 53rd minute.
PBA responded seven minutes later as sophomore Ashley Shoaf came through with the game-tying goal in the 60th minute to knot the score at 2-2.
Just short of the 70th minute is when Embry-Riddle finally broke through for what turned out to be the game-winner as Johansson found Hanna Lundqvist for the goal, her 14th of the season.
The shots were very close in the second-half as they were in the first 45 minutes as ERAU tallied nine shots while the Sailfish produced eight shots. PBA did hold the advantage in corner kick opportunities with a 3-2 lead.
Sailfish senior goal keeper Ashley Morrell played the entire 90 minutes in goal while making three saves. Dina Roper earned the victory in goal with five saves.
Freshman Juliet Waller led the shooting efforts for the Sailfish front-line with three shots, all on goal, despite coming up empty in the goals scored department. Johansson tallied six shots, with two on goal in her team-leading work with one goal and two assists.
PBA will return to the pitch on November 4th for a makeup contest with Eckerd College, a match that was rained out earlier in the season. The two teams will square off at 7 p.m. in St. Petersburg, Florida.
