ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Having had a week off from game action, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team regrouped in a big way on Saturday night as they traveled across the state to take on Eckerd College, an opponent who has traditionally given the Sailfish fits. The Fish would be the one’s causing frustration on Saturday evening however as they dominated the Tritons to a 4-0 Sailfish victory.
After starting out a solid 5-3 to start the season, the Tritons (5-9) have fallen on rough times of late as the EC squad has dropped their last six decisions including tonight’s shutout on senior night for the team before their home crowd.
Tonight’s victory for the Fish comes especially rewarding for PBA fifth-year head coach Jose Gomez who with tonight’s win has now notched at least one career victory over each Sunshine State Conference team with the exception of Lynn University.
The Sailfish (7-5-2) got the scoring started in the 23rd minute as junior Kyle Crouse tallied the first of two goals on the night for the Lakeland Christian High School product as he beat the EC defense for the matches’ first score after an assist from senior Mark Cabrera.
Nine minutes later it would be another Lakeland, Florida native in Cabrera who would find the back of the net as his good work pushed the Sailfish on top 2-0 after 30 minutes of play. Junior Juan Villagrana was credited with the assist. Crouse found glory again just over two minutes later off a free kick from Cheyne Roberts as the Fish coasted into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
PBA outshot the Tritons in the first-half by a 7-2 count as they led 3-0. Mindful of last year’s disappointing home loss to the Tritons which witnessed the determined efforts of Eckerd result in three unanswered goals in the second-half while coming away with a 4-2 victory, the Sailfish knew things were not over despite the solid advantage.
While the Tritons would gain the shots advantage in the second-half and limit the Fish to just two shots in the final 45 minutes, PBA would hold on as senior Joe Yurchak managed the shutout victory in goal.
PBA pushed the lead to its final score of 4-0 when Roberts cashed in on a penalty kick after a red card was issued to EC starting goalkeeper Domenic Spedaliere just shy of the 63rd minute.
Yurchak made four saves in goal for the Sailfish before giving way to sophomore Jonathan Strunk for the final 8:40 of the match.
PBA returns home for their next match which will be their final home match of the season. Hosting their own “Senior Day”, the Sailfish will take on West Palm Beach rival Northwood University on Wednesday, October 28th at Magic Jack Field. The two teams are slated to kickoff at 3 p.m.
