DELAND, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s cross country team traveled to Deland, Florida on Friday evening to take part in the Hatter Invitational hosted by Stetson University. While battling a slew of injuries, the Sailfish still managed to finish ahead of four schools in the team standings in a race that fielded several division I colleges and universities.
As she has done all season, Katherine Harvey, a talented freshman from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, paced the Sailfish with a solid 5K time of 21:52 to finish 79th overall. Following Harvey were fellow freshmen Berkley Simpson (23:11) and Kayla Castro (24:00).
With senior Gina Battista and freshman Faith Warren sitting out the race due to injuries, the Sailfish needed solid performances from other runners to solidify their place in the team standings. Sailfish runners Danielle Navish (24:09) and Chelsea Scalzo (26:39) did just that to round out the top five performances.
Freshman Abalyn McMullen (28:21) and sophomore Cealia Brannan (29:01) also finished the race for the Sailfish and continue to improve.
The Fish ended the Hatter Invitational in 16th place overall among a field of many talented division I runners. Mackenzie Howe from Kennesaw State University was the race’s top finisher with a time of 17:42, and the University of North Florida sprinted away with the team title.
