WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Florida Southern College entered West Palm Beach on Saturday afternoon to take on Palm Beach Atlantic University in men’s soccer action at Magic Jack Field with the hopes of coming away with a positive result. Both teams battled for 90 minutes and then two 10-minute overtime periods only to come away with a 1-1 tie.
The 1-1 result came to the Sailfish after a frustrating turn of events that left the Sailfish short of a shutout victory. Junior Kyle Crouse connected on an early goal on a breakaway for PBA in the 15th minute as teammate Cheyne Roberts fed the speedy Crouse up-field as he broke right and had an easy tap-in for the score.
For the Moccasins, it would be a bit different t ype of goal. Freshman Brad Hunt delivered a corner kick into the box in the 57th minute which then glanced off a PBA player’s head into the back of the net for an own goal and a tie score.
Neither team was able to push one past the respective keepers the remainder of regulation and throughout the overtime periods.
The Sailfish (6-5-2) outshot the visiting Moccasins (1-9-1) by a final tally of 18-9 while racking up 12 corner kicks to four by the Mocs.
Through it all however, the Mocs defense held strong enough as they broke their recent slide without the benefit of an offensive goal.
PBA’s backline defense of freshman Matthew Crumb, junior Andrew Kanarr, and seniors Cheyne Roberts and Anthony Mack played the entire 110 minutes of play while senior goalkeeper Joe Yurchak made five saves in the contest.
Johan Jonsson made four saves for FSC.
The Sailfish will hit the road for their final away contest of the season on Saturday, October 24th as they will travel to St. Petersburg, Florida for a match against Eckerd College. The two teams will battle at 7 p.m.
