WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- With both teams eligible to start practice at the stroke of midnight on October 15th, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s and women’s basketball teams decided to wait a bit later to officially start their respective 2009-2010 campaigns on Thursday. They didn’t wait much longer however as both teams began practice on Thursday with hopes of promising seasons for both programs.
Limited to weight lifting, conditioning, and more individual instruction by the coaches due to NCAA regulations, both teams and especially the coaching staffs were more than ready to have their full squads together for a full team practice. The regular season openers is still about a month away for both teams however the longest sports season of them all, basketball season, begins in mid-October and runs through March.
Returning a solid core from last season’s team that improved their win total by five games from the previous season, men’s’ team head coach Terry Primm is excited about the prospects of a solid team beginning to gel for the long, grinding season.
“It’s year three for our program and what happens in the future depends a lot on the progression we make this season,” said Primm.
“We feel like things are coming together and feel so blessed to be to this point where God has brought us from and the guys are excited to get out there and start making some noise on the basketball court,” continue the third-year head coach of the Sailfish.
On the women’s side, head coach Robin Potera-Haskins also enters her third season at the helm of the Lady Sailfish and has brought in another exciting recruiting class to join a team from last year that went from one win the previous season to 14 victories in her second season. The 13 win jump was one of the biggest in all of the NCAA last season.
“We feel like we laid a solid foundation last season for what we want to do this year and this team has really come together quickly and we feel this could be the best Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball program to ever play here; that’s how strong we feel about this group of young ladies,” said Potera-Haskins.
For the players, October 15th is an exciting time as well. No longer are they simply left with exhausting conditioning drills and pushing their bodies in the weight room. Today marks the day where they get to get back out on the court and compete with their brand new team all together for the first time.
Seniors Chris Joseph and Kristine Webb, leaders on their respective teams, both felt the energy and excitement of a new season as their squads hit the ground running on Thursday.
“We have a group here this year that is hungry to win and you can definitely feel the excitement around here today in knowing we can finally start practicing and get out there,” said Joseph.
For Webb and the women’s team, they have the tough task of molding a lot of new players with some established veterans, a task she and her teammates are obviously looking forward to.
“I’m very excited about our team because we are really close this season,” said Webb.
“There is a love of each other and a love of God and it’s really exciting to bring all the new girls together here to get out to practice and perform on the court. We look forward to a great year.” continued Webb.
Both teams will officially meet the public on Friday, November 13th when the teams participate in a “Meet the Sailfish” event to be held in the Rubin Arena. This event will mark the official kickoff to the 2009-2010 regular season and is free and open to the public. More information will be posted soon concerning this exciting event.
The men’s team kicks off their season with an exhibition contest on Wednesday, November 11th at Florida Memorial University before officially getting underway with their first regular season contest on Wednesday, November 24th as they will play host to Rollins College at 7 pm in the Rubin Arena. The PBA women’s team will battle the University of Tampa on Tuesday, November 17th at 7 pm for their opener.
