DAVIE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team traveled to nearby Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday evening and came away with a victory over the Sharks for the third consecutive season. All three matches have been played in Davie with each match awarding the Fish with a one goal victory. A much needed victory, the Sailfish improve to 6-5-1 while NSU drops to 7-7-0 on the season.
Senior Johnathon Clark tallied the game-winning score in the 63rd minute as he broke a scoreless tie when junior Tumi Magadlela found Clark for a one-on-one with NSU goal keeper Lyle Howe who Clark proceeded to beat from the right-side for the game’s only goal.
PBA senior keeper Joe Yurchak earned his third shutout of the season while making six saves in goal for the Fish.
Having dropped four of their past five matches, the Sailfish were in desperate need of a win with the defense holding on long enough to shutout the Sharks at the NSU Soccer Complex.
Much like their most recent match versus Rollins College last Saturday, it took the Fish until the second-half to really get moving well offensively. PBA was limited to three shots in the first-half while NSU tallied seven total shots including four on goal in the first 45 minutes.
NSU nearly broke the scoreless tie with the seconds dwindling down in the first-half as Sharks player Aly Hassan had a one-on-one opportunity against Yurchak only to see his attempted shot bounce off the crossbar for a Sailfish clearance.
Half number two proved to be a different story for the two teams however as they reversed fortunes in the shots department with PBA holding the 7-3 advantage including the game-winner by Clark.
PBA will take on another important NCAA South Region foe in Florida Southern College on Saturday afternoon as the Sailfish welcome in the Moccassins for a 3 pm showdown at Magic Jack Field. The match is a makeup contest from a previous rainout in early September. Follow the action through live statistics and a live audio broadcast by tuning in to the Sailfish Sports Network.
