WINTER PARK, Fla.- Saturday turned out to be a tough day for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team, in more ways than one. Frustrated by a talented Rollins College team that tallied a 6-0 victory over the Fish, the team must also overcome being without leading scorer Angie Kuhn for their next match as she was issued a red card in the loss.
Now 4-5 on the season, the Sailfish were hoping for a similar fortune as last season’s matchup against the Tars which saw the Fish utilize a determined defensive effort in gaining a 1-1 decision against RC at Lantana Field.
That wouldn’t be the case today however as the #8-ranked Tars scored four goals in an eight-minute span in the first-half as they cruised to the victory in 81 minutes as the game was cut short due to lightning.
Certainly a talented squad with their only loss coming at the hands of #1-ranked University of West Florida, the Tars began their scoring with a Rachel Jakubowski goal just short of the 12th minute when teammate Ashley Waplinger sent a long cross into the box where Jakubowski conveniently placed a solid header into the back of the net.
Just under five minutes later Jessica Deese made it 2-0 when she collected a loose ball near the box and made one quick move, turned and fired the shot into the goal. Leading scorer Chelsea Brady got into the act next for RC at the 17:20 mark when Jakubowksi fed her for her sixth goal of the season. Jakubowski closed out the quick strikes with an unassisted goal just two minutes later.
Leah Hirsch added a penalty kick goal in the 39th minute while Joy Powell connected for the only second-half goal by either team on a double-assist from Deese and Jakubowski in the 55th minute.
A frustrating night overall, the Sailfish where whistled for five cautions on the night including two yellow cards for Kuhn who will be forced to sit out the team’s next contest. Ashley Morrell and Kayla Webb split the goalkeeping duties for PBA with each allowing three goals. Webb made five saves in her 63 minutes of action.
The next match for PBA will be against Palm Beach County rival Lynn University on Wednesday, October 13th as they will take on the Fighting Knights at approximately 3 p.m.
